Understand the Three Signals You Are Connecting
A microphone, guitar and phone may all eventually become “sound,” but electrically they are not the same thing.
A microphone normally produces a mic-level signal.
A guitar pickup produces an instrument-level signal, often with different impedance requirements.

When using a wired phone, start with a healthy source level rather than leaving the phone at 10% and compensating with enormous PA gain. Around three-quarters device level can be a useful starting point on many systems, then fine-tune at the PA.

Set Your Levels in the Right Order
Correct connections only solve half the problem.
The other half is gain staging.

Step 1 — Turn everything down
Set individual channel levels and master volume low before connecting or powering the system.

Once the balance between your sources feels right, use the master control to set overall audience volume.
Stop Feedback Before It Starts
Feedback is the familiar howl created when sound from the loudspeaker gets back into the microphone, is amplified again, returns to the microphone, and repeats.
Shure's guidance emphasizes several fundamentals: keep microphones and loudspeakers separated, keep the microphone close to the intended sound source and avoid aiming the microphone toward the loudspeaker.
For a simple singer-songwriter setup:
Put the main PA in front of the microphone position, facing the audience.
Do not put the speaker directly behind your microphone and then attempt to solve physics with more EQ.

- sing close to the microphone
- use only as much gain as you need

Do You Need an External Mixer?
Not always.
If your powered PA already gives you:
- a proper microphone input

- separate playback from AUX or Bluetooth
- independent level control
